Some of our nation’s most precious historic landmarks are in trouble.
The uncertainty of the world today has placed tremendous pressure on historic, independent restaurants. Found in big cities and Main Street communities, urban centers and college towns, these landmark locations span the country. Each restaurant brings a unique flavor to their community and is a vital part of the local economy. Many are family owned and operated, handed down from generation to generation. They remain cornerstones of their neighborhoods and add irreplaceable flavor to the national landscape. And we know that preserving these icons has never been more important.
As many as 85% of independent restaurants could close by the end of this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The National Conservancy for Historic Restaurants serves as a resource for historic restaurants as well as consumers. We identify and designate historic restaurants for the national NCHR registry. We provide national, regional, and local recognition and promotion to generate awareness and create sustainable growth. And we celebrate the individuality of these iconic landmarks.
Every historic restaurant has a
story to tell
To qualify for The National Conservancy for Historic Restaurants, each restaurant must be at least fifty years old and independently owned and operated. These restaurants have served generations of customers and provided a lifetime of memories to all that have dined there. Whether it’s a local diner or white tablecloth location, they each have earned a spot on the national NCHR registry—providing a touchstone for locals and a must-experience destination for visitors.
